Hamed Shafia granted escorted prison absence
Hamed Shafia escorted absence granted after parole board review and gradual progress See why the request was partly approved and what the next steps may mean
Hamed Shafia, who was convicted in 2012 of killing his three sisters and another woman, has been granted an escorted absence from the mediumsecurity prison where he is serving a life sentence.
A Parole Board of Canada panel approved a brief visit to a minimumsecurity facility but turned down his request for an escorted mosque visit. The panel said he has made progress, but more work is needed and any changes should happen gradually.
Shafia and his parents were found guilty of four counts of firstdegree murder in connection with the 2009 deaths of Zainab, Sahar, Geeti and Rona Amir Mohammad, whose bodies were found in a car in the Rideau Canal in Kingston, Ontario.
