A downtown Toronto courtroom descended into chaos on Friday after a jury found Harold Santana Simon not guilty of seconddegree murder in the death of 20yearold Makayla RoxburghCarpino.
Court officers stepped in after family members and friends of RoxburghCarpino reacted angrily to the verdict. Simon was convicted on two firearms charges: unauthorized possession of a firearm and being in a vehicle knowing there was a loaded firearm.
The case centered on events from May 11, 2024, when Simon was arrested in Orillia after a highrisk takedown. During the trial, the defence argued the shooting was accidental and said the Crown had not proven murder beyond a reasonable doubt, while prosecutors said jealousy and anger led Simon to kill RoxburghCarpino. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
