Severe storm floods Winnipeg streets and basements

A powerful thunderstorm hit Winnipeg on Tuesday night and Wednesday, bringing about 120 millimetres of rain, hail and strong winds that left streets flooded, trees downed and many homes with basement damage. City officials said the storm led to nearly 1,000 service requests, including flooding, sewer backups, debris removal and repairs to damaged traffic signals. In North Kildonan, residents reported water and sewage backing up into basements as crews responded to widespread calls. The storm also caused major power problems across Manitoba. Manitoba Hydro said outages affected about 32,000 customers in the southern part of the province at one point, including nearly 20,000 in Winnipeg. The utility said damage to power lines and poles was extensive, and repairs could take time because crews are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
