11-year-old cyclist’s death renews road safety concerns in Beauport

The death of an 11yearold boy after being struck while riding his bicycle in Quebec City’s Beauport borough has renewed calls for safer streets in residential areas used by children.
Residents and road safety advocates say speeding has been a longstanding concern on des Sablonnières Avenue, where schools, a park and many families are nearby. Neighbours say they have repeatedly asked for sidewalks, speed bumps and other trafficcalming measures.
Police say the crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. Monday near the intersection of des Sablonnières Avenue and Raymond Boulevard. The boy was taken to hospital in cardiac arrest and later died. A 76yearold woman was arrested after leaving the scene and later released while investigators continue their work.
The tragedy follows another serious crash in Beauport in May that injured two students, adding to pressure on city officials to improve crossings, cycling infrastructure and safety measures in school zones.
