Chrystia Freeland to publish book on Canada-U.S. relations

Former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland will publish a new book this fall about CanadaU.S. relations, power and diplomacy. Titled Unreliable Boyfriend: An Insider’s View of Dealing with a Chaotic Superpower, Plutocrats, and Other Complicated People, the book is set for release on Oct. 13 by Simon & Schuster Canada. The book draws on Freeland’s experience as a journalist and federal politician, including her role in negotiating the CanadaUnited StatesMexico Agreement and her time as deputy prime minister and finance minister. It will combine reporting, memoir and analysis to examine the United States’ changing place in global politics. Freeland said the book reflects on how countries respond when older rules no longer seem to apply. Simon & Schuster Canada described it as a timely look at liberal democracy and Canada’s evolving relationship with the United States. Freeland resigned from parliament in January 2026 and is now a resident fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics; she is also set to become CEO of the Rhodes Trust in Oxford in July.
