Gilbert + Tobin expands AI use with OpenAI

Australian law firm uses OpenAI tools to speed research, drafting and workflows See how governance, training and human review drive secure AI adoption

Australian law firm Gilbert + Tobin is expanding its use of OpenAI tools across operations, with leadership support and governance controls shaping adoption. The firm says ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex are being used to help teams with research, drafting, analysis, and workflow automation while keeping human review and accountability in place. The company first rolled out ChatGPT to operations teams in a controlled setting before extending access to areas including marketing, finance, recruitment, technology, and business development. According to the firm, active use among enabled users reached 87% by June 2026, helped by rolespecific training and examples from senior leaders. Gilbert + Tobin says its rollout was designed around confidentiality, access controls, and data handling requirements, including Australian data residency. The firm reports that AI tools have reduced some recruitment and compliance tasks from hours to minutes and have helped automate parts of audit reporting and file processing. It plans to broaden access further as additional controls are put in place.
