The Federation of Canadian Municipalities has created a new defence task force to improve coordination between cities and the federal government as Canada expands military spending.
The announcement was made Friday at the group’s annual conference in Edmonton. FCM president Rebecca Bligh said the goal is to connect municipalities with partners such as RCMP detachments and chambers of commerce so local governments can better support defencerelated needs.
Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack said the city can contribute through its supply chain, infrastructure, and industries such as innovation, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and life sciences. The task force will be chaired by councillors Will ColeHamilton of Comox, B.C., and Conny Glenn of Kingston, Ont.
