GTA mayors outline steps to support businesses as U.S. tariffs loom

Mayors in Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton say they are preparing measures to help local businesses respond to new U.S. tariffs set to take effect in midAugust. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the city will reconvene an economic action team of business and labour leaders, keep supporting Canadian suppliers in city procurement, and encourage residents to shop locally. Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish said her city will continue working with local business leaders and urged companies to look for markets outside the U.S. In Brampton, Mayor Patrick Brown said the city has already been helping firms diversify into new markets and sectors since tariffs first became an issue last year. All three mayors said their cities will keep working with federal and provincial governments as they try to reduce the impact on workers and businesses.
