Transport Canada names observer after Repentigny train derailment

Transport Canada has appointed a minister's observer to support the Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s investigation into a train derailment near Montreal last weekend.
The derailment happened in Repentigny, Que., on the edge of a residential area. No one was injured and no hazardous materials were released, but 49 railcars left the tracks.
Transport Canada said rail safety inspectors are monitoring CN Rail’s response to make sure safety rules and speed limits are being followed. Trains in the area are now running at about 15 km/h, below the normal 80 km/h limit.
CN said it rebuilt the track and track bed before service resumed overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, and more repairs are planned.
