Former Flames and Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher dies at 90

Former NHL executive Cliff Fletcher has died at the age of 90. The Toronto Maple Leafs said he died on Friday and did not release a cause of death. Fletcher spent seven decades in the NHL and is best known for building the Calgary Flames into a championship team. He helped guide the club to the 1989 Stanley Cup title after joining the organization as general manager in the 1970s, when it was still the Atlanta Flames. He later played a major role in Toronto’s rebuild in the 1990s, including the move to bring in Doug Gilmour, which helped the Maple Leafs become a stronger playoff team. Fletcher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 2004.
