Maine senators urge Trump to release heating oil reserves as prices rise
Maine heating oil prices are surging as Collins and King urge reserve release A timely move could ease costs for Maine families as fuel markets stay tight
Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King have asked President Donald Trump to release heating oil from the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, saying the move could help consumers facing higher costs.
In a Tuesday letter, the senators said recent conflicts in the Middle East and the RussiaUkraine war have limited supply in global markets. They argued that Maine is especially exposed because much of the state’s heating oil is imported.
The Maine Department of Energy Resources said the statewide average home heating oil price was $5.77 on Sept. 14, about 74% higher than the $3.32 average recorded a year earlier. The article also noted elevated fuel prices nationally, including a recordhigh diesel average earlier in the week and a stillelevated regular gasoline average.
