New evacuations ordered in southwestern France as wildfires intensify

French authorities have ordered nearly 4,000 more evacuations in the Gironde region near Bordeaux as hot, dry weather returned and threatened efforts to contain a large wildfire burning west of the city. Officials said the fire had been stabilized but not extinguished, with heat, low humidity and strong winds raising the risk of new flareups. The evacuation order covered tourist sites, campsites, holiday villages and leisure parks around Lacanau on France’s Atlantic coast. The fire is part of a wider crisis across southwestern Europe, where wildfires in France and Spain have forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and vacation areas. In France, more than 116,000 hectares have burned this year, while Spain is also battling multiple major blazes during its fourth heat wave of the summer.
