Quebec updates consumer protection rules for product repairs

Quebec consumer protection rules expand repair rights for 14 products after purchase See which appliances and devices qualify, and how to file a complaint if denied

Quebec has updated its consumer protection rules to let buyers demand repairs for certain products that fail within a set period after purchase. The new warranty applies to 14 product categories bought on or after Oct. 5. It covers items such as refrigerators, stoves, air conditioners and heat pumps for up to six years, while washers, dryers and dishwashers are covered for up to five years and televisions for up to four years. Computers, smartphones and tablets are covered for up to three years. The province says the delivery date is used to determine a product’s age. If a retailer or manufacturer refuses to repair a covered item, consumers can file a complaint with Quebec’s consumer protection agency. The rules were adopted in 2023, and some manufacturers have already said the changes could lead to higher prices on affected products.
