Ford and Joly urge Stellantis to assign new model to Brampton plant
Stellantis Brampton plant deal: Ford and Joly push for new vehicle commitment Protect Ontario auto jobs and see how the governments may respond next
Ontario Premier Doug Ford and federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly are pressing Stellantis to commit to a new vehicle model at its idle Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant after the company signaled a possible sale of the site.
Stellantis recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian armoured vehicle maker Roshel about a potential sale of the plant. Joly said Ottawa wants the automaker to keep its commitments to Canadian workers and warned that the government could seek repayment of public money if the company does not follow through.
Ford backed Joly’s position, saying the Brampton facility should keep building vehicles and that the province wants to protect auto jobs in Ontario. The plant has been idle since 2023, and the issue has raised concerns for more than 2,000 workers as labour talks remain unresolved.
