Leila Ben Salem killing: Canada condemns the Montreal homicide of a CRA worker Police probe the attack as a homicide as leaders vow accountability and action
Federal leaders have condemned the killing of Leila Ben Salem, a 45yearold Canada Revenue Agency employee who was attacked in her Montreal apartment while taking part in a work Zoom call.
Prime Minister Mark Carney told the House of Commons that Canada will work to ensure the person responsible is held fully accountable, and he offered condolences to Ben Salem’s family. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also called the killing a terrible tragedy.
Montreal police say the death, reported Tuesday in the VilleMarie borough near RenéLévesque Boulevard East and StChristophe Street, is now being investigated as a homicide. No arrests have been announced, and police have not released a possible motive. Québec solidaire candidate Ruba Ghazal said governments must do more to prevent violence against women.
