RCMP says ties with allies remain strong after report on FBI co-operation

RCMP ties with U.S. partners stay strong despite 9/11 memo fallout See how Canada and the FBI are keeping security co-operation on track

The RCMP says its relationships with U.S. and other international partners remain strong after a New York Times report said FBI Director Kash Patel briefly halted some cooperation with Canadian counterparts over a CBC memo about how to describe the Sept. 11 attacks. RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme said the force continues to work closely with U.S. agencies, as well as with domestic and international partners in the Five Eyes intelligencesharing network. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree’s office also said Canada values its longstanding security and law enforcement partnerships with the United States. The report said some meetings were cancelled and parts of the collaboration paused around the anniversary of 9/11. CBC later clarified its guidance, saying direct attribution is not required when describing the attacks as terrorism. The FBI declined to comment, while the White House criticized the CBC guidance.
