Romney says people 80 and older should not lead the country
Mitt Romney says leaders over 80 shouldn't run the U.S., citing age and brain changes; see why his comments are sparking fresh political debate.
Former Sen. Mitt Romney said he believes people aged 80 and older should not be in charge of running the United States. He made the remark in an interview on Deseret Voices after being asked whether he would run for president again in 2028.
Romney, who will turn 80 next year, joked that a third presidential bid would be his chance to get it right. He added that age matters in leadership and pointed to claims that the human brain changes with age.
The comments come as age has become a bigger issue in U.S. politics. President Donald Trump turned 80 last month, and former President Joe Biden was 82 when he left office.
