Hawley criticizes GOP senators after SAVE Act vote fails

Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri criticized four Republican senators after they joined Democrats to block an effort to attach the SAVE Act to the Senate’s reconciliation package. The measure would have added voter ID and citizenship verification requirements to federal election registration. Hawley argued that voter ID is already common in many states and said Congress has a role in setting election rules for federal races. The senators who voted against the amendment were Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. Supporters of the block said election rules should remain at the state level, while Hawley said the proposal was aimed at protecting ballot integrity.
