Highly trained security dogs are helping protect fans at the men’s FIFA World Cup in Vancouver, where they are working alongside handlers at major event sites.
Dogs such as Ryker, Tiki and Hunter are trained to detect explosives and stay calm in crowded environments. Vancouver police dogs are used for explosives, narcotics and apprehension work, while some U.S.based dogs were brought in because FIFA requires vapour wake detection at host venues.
Handlers said the dogs undergo extensive training and annual certification, and so far no threats have been found during World Cup assignments. Officials said the use of detection dogs is becoming more common at large sporting events, airports and border crossings.
