Vancouver police warn riders after fatal and serious e-scooter crashes

Vancouver police are warning riders about helmet use after two serious escooter crashes in the city, including one that turned fatal. Police said a 30yearold woman riding a scooter collided with a vehicle near Venables Street and Commercial Drive on July 3. She was not wearing a helmet, suffered a head injury, and died in hospital on July 11. In a separate incident on Sunday, a 54yearold woman riding an electric kick scooter was struck from behind by another scooter rider in Coal Harbour. She was taken to hospital with a head injury and a broken collarbone and is expected to recover. Vancouver police said helmets may not prevent a collision, but they can reduce the severity of injuries. Under BC rules for electric kick scooters, riders must wear a bicycle helmet. Police also said they are concerned about unsafe scooter use after videos of riders behaving recklessly in public places circulated online.
