Prime Minister Mark Carney has called three federal byelections for Aug. 31 in ridings in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.
The votes will be held in North VancouverCapilano, BeachesEast York and ChicoutimiLe Fjord. The seats became vacant earlier this summer after one MP left politics, another was appointed Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, and a third was appointed to the Senate.
The byelections come after an earlier round of Ontario byelections helped the Liberals increase their seat count. The party currently holds 172 seats in the House of Commons, while the Conservatives have 139, the Bloc Québécois 21, the NDP five, the Greens one and one seat is held by an independent.
