A video shared on social media shows a motorboat riding in the wake of a BC Ferries vessel before speeding away, prompting a reminder about marine safety.
BC Ferries and the BC Ferries and Marine Workers Union said the maneuver is dangerous because getting too close to a ferry can create risk for both boaters and crew. Union representative Chris Klassen said the situation could force the ferry to reduce speed and launch a rescue boat if contact were made.
The union also said operators of pleasure boats should have boating safety training and understand how to navigate around large vessels. Klassen described the stunt as unnecessary and foolish, and said the video showed little sign of safe boating practice.
