Avi Lewis criticizes Carney over trade war priorities
Avi Lewis criticizes Carney over trade response, pushing worker-first relief NDP backs EI, housing and grocery fixes as it works to rebuild in Toronto
NDP Leader Avi Lewis said Prime Minister Mark Carney is putting corporate interests ahead of ordinary Canadians as the federal government responds to the U.S. trade dispute. Speaking in Toronto on Tuesday, Lewis said the government should focus more on workers, renters, and people struggling with the cost of living.
Lewis met with union leaders, housing advocates, and food bank organizers during a threeday caucus retreat in Toronto. He called for stronger employment insurance, better wage support for affected workers, more affordable housing, rent controls, and public grocery stores aimed at lowering food costs.
The NDP is also using the Toronto area as part of a broader rebuild after its poor 2025 election result. Party officials said the strategy includes yearround organizing and renewed efforts to win seats in the city, while Lewis signaled that he may eventually run in Toronto.
