Montreal is spending $540,000 to renovate 45 vacant housing units so they can be used more quickly by vulnerable residents, Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said Friday.
Some of the apartments are expected to be ready as early as August, with the full group targeted for availability by September. City officials said the units will go first to seniors, families with children and other renters in urgent need of housing.
The move comes as the city approaches Quebec’s July 1 moving day, when many households are still searching for affordable homes. Montreal also said it will raise funding for the city’s housing office over the next three years to support people experiencing homelessness.
