Aurora targets profitability as autonomous trucking fleet grows

Aurora autonomous trucking expands in Texas as it targets profitability by 2028 See how driverless semitrucks could cut freight costs and reshape shipping routes

Aurora Innovation is expanding its autonomous trucking operations in Texas as it works toward profitability. CNBC rode in one of the company’s driverless semitrucks along major freight routes between Houston and Dallas and between Fort Worth and El Paso. CEO Chris Urmson said Aurora is aiming for positive free cash flow by 2028, supported by a larger fleet of autonomous trucks on the road. The company currently has 20 driverless trucks operating and plans to reach 200 by the end of this year. Aurora says its vehicles can run more efficiently than humandriven trucks and lower operating costs for freight customers through a mileagebased service model. Analysts cited in the story pointed to the potential for lower permile costs, while some industry observers said adoption will depend on how shipping firms weigh cost savings against the value of human drivers.
