Trump threatens Iran as U.S. sanctions alleged financier

Trump Iran tensions rise as sanctions target a key financier amid new threats See how Washington responds as diplomacy, sanctions, and security risks escalate

President Donald Trump said Iran would face severe retaliation if it tried to assassinate him, while the U.S. Treasury announced sanctions against an alleged Iranian financier. The comments came as tensions rose again between Washington and Tehran after the collapse of a fragile ceasefire tied to last month’s preliminary agreement. Iran said the new U.S. financial action violated that deal. Trump said on Truth Social that the U.S. military was ready to respond if Iran acted on reported threats against him. U.S. media had earlier reported that Israel shared intelligence about an alleged Iranian plot to kill the former president. Separately, Treasury said it targeted Iranian financial facilitator Ali Ansari, accusing him of overseeing assets that benefit Iran’s leadership and other regime elites. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the U.S. would continue using sanctions to isolate those leaders from the global financial system. The dispute unfolded while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was reported to be in Oman for talks. Oman has been trying to mediate between the two sides, and officials have continued discussing possible steps to keep shipping moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
