Ottawa Council Votes to Rename Trump Avenue
Ottawa city council backs Trump Avenue renaming after 25 years of debate Public consultation opens now to help choose a new name for the street
Ottawa city council has unanimously approved a process to rename Trump Avenue, a street in the Central Park neighbourhood that has carried the name for more than 25 years.
Coun. Riley Brockington, who represents River Ward, introduced the motion and said the current name would not have met commemorative naming rules if reviewed formally. He said he will now begin public consultation to gather new name ideas.
The street was originally named in the late 1990s and early 2000s to reflect Donald Trump’s profile as a New York real estate figure. Brockington said the decision comes amid rising tensions with the United States and called the name change a way to move forward.
