New Brunswick MLA faces scrutiny after reading AI-written speech

A Progressive Conservative MLA in New Brunswick has admitted using artificial intelligence to help draft remarks he read in the legislature, including some AIgenerated prompts that were left in the final text. Bill Oliver, the MLA for Kings Centre, said he used AI to prepare speaking notes for a June 9 debate on whether the province should create an energy advocate. He later acknowledged that the prompts were not removed before he delivered the speech, which drew public attention after clips circulated on social media. Oliver said the speech reflected his own views, but that he learned an important lesson. Opposition and party members responded by calling for clearer rules around AI use in the legislature, and the Progressive Conservative caucus says it is now working on an AI policy for its members. Other caucuses have taken different approaches, with the Greens already adopting a policy and the Liberals saying they do not yet have one.
