A woman who was critically injured in a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia, has awakened after spending 10 days in an induced coma.
According to family updates shared online, Leah Stewart told her mother and partner, "I love you," after doctors reduced her sedation in the ICU. Her brother said her first concern was for her daughter, August.
Stewart, a mother and teacher in her 30s, has undergone five surgeries, including an arm amputation, after the June 13 attack. She was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition after a shark bit her legs and arms while she was swimming near shore.
