Liberals win Chicoutimi-Le Fjord byelection

Chicoutimi-Le Fjord byelection: Daniel Gobeil gives Liberals a key Quebec win See how the result strengthens Mark Carney and shifts the House balance

Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil has won the federal byelection in ChicoutimiLe Fjord, taking the Quebec seat from the Conservatives and strengthening Prime Minister Mark Carney’s position in the House of Commons. With most polls counted, Gobeil led by a wide margin over Bloc Québécois candidate Caroline Dubé, while Conservative Régis Gaudreault finished third. The result marks the Liberals’ first win in the riding since 2015. Gobeil, a dairy farmer and former head of a Quebec dairy producers group, said his victory would help bring the SaguenayLacSaintJean region’s concerns to Ottawa, especially as local industries face pressure from U.S. tariffs and trade tensions. The Liberals also won two other byelections held Monday in Ontario and British Columbia.
