Quebec faces pressure to restrict energy drinks for teens
Quebec energy drink ban debate after teen death sparks urgent calls for limits Parents and experts push stricter sales rules as the province reviews next steps
Parents, health experts and school groups in Quebec are urging the province to restrict energy drink sales to teens after the death of 15yearold Zachary Miron in January 2024.
A coroner’s report said the caffeine in an energy drink, combined with medication he was taking for ADHD, likely caused an irregular heartbeat that led to his death. His parents have since launched a petition calling for a ban on energy drinks for children under 16, and it has gathered more than 31,000 signatures.
The campaign has drawn support from teachers, school boards, public health groups and junior sports organizations, while the beverage industry opposes a full ban. Quebec’s health minister says the government is reviewing options and speaking with public health officials, pharmacists and other provinces as it considers possible next steps.
