Four Vancouver Island marmots have been released into the wild near Mount Washington, close to Courtenay, as part of an ongoing conservation effort.
The species has been recovering through a breeding program after its wild population fell to fewer than 30 in 2003. Officials say more releases are planned this summer, and the number of marmots emerging from hibernation has now passed 400, the highest level recorded in about four decades.
The Marmot Recovery Foundation says the animals released now may be trapped again next year and moved to more remote colonies that still need support.
