Carney government faces a consequential fall as Parliament returns
Mark Carney opens Parliament with Bill C-39 and a packed fall agenda See how affordability, trade and budget fights could shape Canada next
Prime Minister Mark Carney is opening Parliament’s fall session with a message that major decisions are ahead, as his government prepares to advance a broad legislative agenda and face renewed scrutiny over affordability and trade policy.
The main item on the agenda is Bill C39, the Building Canada Strong Act, a large economic bill that would affect environmental regulation, project assessment and labour rules. The government says the measure is meant to respond to current economic pressures, while critics are warning it could weaken labour protections and face pushback from environmental groups.
At the same time, opposition parties are pressing the government on the cost of living, including housing, gas and groceries. The fall session is also expected to include debate over social media regulation, possible private investment in major airports and the next federal budget, alongside important provincial and national political events later in the season.
