Toronto man charged in alleged street race was out on bail at time of crash

Toronto police say they have arrested a 42yearold man accused of driving a Lamborghini in a street race that led to a serious collision on Highway 2A near Meadowvale Road on July 17. Investigators allege the Lamborghini was racing a Mercedes eastbound when the Mercedes lost control, hit a Ford F150, and then struck a tree. Police say the Lamborghini left the scene, and the driver was later charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene, and stunt racing. Court records also show the accused, Akil Heywood, was already on bail for separate 2023 kidnapping and extortionrelated charges linked to the Aiden Pleterski case. Police say the Lamborghini has been recovered, and Heywood remains in custody while the streetracing case continues.
