Man arrested after arson fire at North York seniors' building
Toronto fire arrest: police charge a man after a seniors' housing blaze See what investigators say about the North York fire and residents displaced
Toronto police say they have arrested a 62yearold man in connection with a Thursday fire at a seniors' housing building near Victoria Park Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East in North York.
Emergency crews were called to the building around 1:52 a.m. after reports of smoke and fire. Two women were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, and the hallway fire on the ninth floor was put out by firefighters.
Police allege the suspect started the fire and left the scene before being identified by investigators. He faces arson charges and three counts of disobeying a court order, and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Water and smoke damage have displaced residents in 18 units for about a week, and investigators say they have not linked the incident to a separate fire at the same building in late June.
