A regional district in British Columbia has started a summer contest aimed at encouraging residents to use less water on their lawns during dry conditions.
The Regional District of the OkanaganSimilkameen is asking residents connected to its water system to submit photos of their brown or golden yards for a chance to win up to $100. The program is designed to promote conservation as drought levels remain high in parts of the region.
Officials and local gardening experts say the contest is meant to shift habits around lawn watering and highlight droughttolerant plants that can thrive in the Okanagan climate. Entries are open until Aug. 15, with winners to be drawn at the end of August.
