Marco Rubio becomes national security adviser, expanding his Trump-era influence See how this rare dual role could reshape U.S. national security decisions
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been formally appointed as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, making the role permanent after serving in the post on an interim basis since May 2025.
The appointment adds to Rubio’s unusually large portfolio in the Trump administration, where he also holds senior State Department responsibilities. Officials confirmed that he will continue overseeing the National Security Council process and act as a direct channel to the president on national security issues.
Rubio is now only the second person in U.S. history to serve simultaneously as secretary of state and national security adviser, following Henry Kissinger under President Richard Nixon. His expanding set of duties has also made him a frequent subject of online attention and political memes.
