Search for survivors continues after earthquakes hit Venezuela

Rescue teams in Venezuela are searching for survivors after two strong earthquakes struck the country in quick succession on Wednesday evening local time. Officials said at least 164 people have been confirmed dead and 971 injured, with the number expected to change as crews continue working through collapsed buildings. The quakes caused major damage in Caracas and nearby areas, including La Guaira state, which authorities described as a disaster zone. Residents reported hearing screams and seeing buildings crumble, while emergency workers and volunteers used whatever tools they could find to clear rubble and reach trapped people. The U.S. Geological Survey issued a red alert, warning that widespread damage and high casualties were likely based on the strength of the shaking and the population exposed. Several countries, including the U.S., Mexico, El Salvador, Ecuador and Qatar, said they were sending rescue teams and humanitarian aid.
