Train collision north of London leaves one dead and dozens injured

Two passenger trains collided near Bedford, north of London, on Friday, leaving one train driver dead and nearly 90 people injured. Emergency crews responded with an air ambulance and specialist rescue teams as authorities declared a major incident. Police said the trains were both heading toward London St. Pancras when they collided around 5:15 p.m. local time. East of England Ambulance Service said 11 people suffered very serious injuries, 22 had serious injuries and 56 had minor injuries. A passenger described being thrown forward by the impact and seeing smoke, as well as people with broken bones and other injuries. East Midlands Railway said it canceled all trains to and from St. Pancras for the rest of Friday while investigators and emergency services remained at the scene.
