Feds release more details on delayed Gordie Howe Bridge opening

Gordie Howe International Bridge delay details explain why opening was postponed See the latest on costs, governance concerns, and what Ottawa disclosed

The Canadian government has released new information about delays in opening the Gordie Howe International Bridge and some related construction costs. The bridge links Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, and opened on July 27, 2026 after several postponements. According to federal responses to questions from Conservative MP Harb Gill, the U.S. asked in June to delay the opening, citing issues tied to the bridge’s governance and financial framework. Gill says Ottawa still has not provided enough detail and argues the explanation given by Prime Minister Mark Carney was too vague. The responses also show that multiple agencies on both sides of the border were involved in working through the delay. On costs, the WindsorDetroit Bridge Authority said the project rose from $5.7 billion in 2018 to $6.4 billion in 2024, but it did not provide a full breakdown of the increase, saying that doing so would require manual work that could risk incomplete or misleading information.
