Prime Minister Mark Carney says a recent call with U.S. President Donald Trump went beyond NATO and included discussions on Iran, Middle East security, Arctic defence and Canada’s military spending plans.
Carney described the conversation as constructive and said senior White House officials joined parts of the call. He noted that Canada is increasing defence spending and said he expects the country to reach 4 per cent of GDP on defence by 2029, ahead of NATO’s planned review that same year.
The discussion came as NATO leaders prepare for next month’s summit in Ankara, Turkey, where alliance members are expected to face renewed pressure to present credible spending plans and new defence commitments.
