Treasury sanctions Russia's VTB Bank over Iran ties
VTB Bank sanctions target Russia’s role in Iran sanctions evasion through finance See how the move could squeeze funds and raise risks for China-linked banks
The U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions on Russia’s statecontrolled VTB Bank on Monday, saying the move is part of its broader effort to pressure Iran by targeting financial partners that help it evade restrictions.
Treasury said the action was tied to allegations that VTB helped Iranian banks bypass sanctions through correspondent banking relationships. Officials said the measures could block tens of millions of dollars, though analysts questioned how much additional effect the sanctions would have because VTB was already heavily restricted by the United States.
The decision also raised concerns about possible spillover effects for China, which is Iran’s largest oil customer. VTB is reportedly the only Russian bank with a branch in China, and some analysts said that could increase the risk for Chinese banks that transact with it.
