OpenAI reportedly accelerates AI phone plans
OpenAI AI phone enters mass production sooner, with on-device vision and language tools See how MediaTek, dual processors, and new hardware plans could reshape the market
OpenAI is reportedly speeding up work on its first AIfocused phone, with supply chain analyst MingChi Kuo saying the device could enter mass production in the first half of 2027, about a year earlier than previously expected.
According to the report, the device would emphasize ondevice AI capabilities, including an upgraded image signal processor designed to improve visual sensing for AI agents. MediaTek is said to be the planned sole chip supplier, and the phone may use two AI processors to handle vision and language tasks.
The accelerated timeline may reflect both competition in the AI hardware market and OpenAI’s broader investor ambitions. The report also raises questions about how this device would fit with OpenAI’s earlier work with Jony Ive’s io, which was acquired last year as part of the company’s push to build new hardware beyond traditional screens.
