Mattress fire at North York highrise sends 2 to hospital

A fire at a highrise on Victoria Park Avenue in North York early Thursday morning sent two people to hospital, Toronto fire said. Crews were called just before 2 a.m. to the 9th floor of 1420 Victoria Park, where they found heavy smoke and a mattress burning in a corridor. Fire crews said the blaze was extinguished quickly, but smoke spread through the building. Paramedics said one person suffered serious but nonlifethreatening injuries, while another had minor injuries. Toronto fire also said most residents on the 9th floor were asked to leave their apartments temporarily while the smoke was cleared. A similar fire was reported at the same building less than two weeks ago.
