Scammers trick Rogers customers into mailing away iPads
Rogers scam target customers with fake iPad offers and costly device charges Protect your account and spot the warning signs before you get billed
Two Rogers customers in Ontario say they were targeted by a scam that started with a call offering a cheaper plan and a free iPad, then ended with them being billed for devices they no longer had.
CBC News reported that Brianna MacKay of Oakville accepted what she believed was a legitimate promotion after a caller said the offer came from Rogers. After the iPad arrived, she was told it had been sent in error and asked to return it using a shipping label provided by the caller. The package went to a Brampton address instead of Rogers, and MacKay was left with monthly charges for the iPad and a data plan.
Jeong Park, a 74yearold Toronto resident, described a similar experience after being contacted by someone claiming to represent Rogers. In her case, the caller asked for a photo of her driver’s licence and allegedly enrolled her in a twoyear iPad financing agreement. The return label she received pointed to an Edmonton address. Both customers say Rogers declined to cancel the plans, though the company later removed the data fee and offered each a onetime credit.
Rogers says it warns customers not to return devices to any address other than an official Rogers location and says it will never call to ask for a device to be sent back. Fraud experts say the scam fits a broader pattern of service impersonation schemes, and the Canadian AntiFraud Centre says it has tracked similar cases since 2022.
