The federal government has stopped plans to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, saying the project would affect public space, housing, noise, and the environment.
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said Ottawa will only move ahead with the approved runway safety work already underway. The expansion proposal had included a longer runway and the ability to handle jet aircraft.
MacKinnon said the decision was shaped by public feedback, with more than 87,000 responses submitted during Transport Canada’s consultation. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow welcomed the move and urged Ontario to return cityowned land tied to the proposal, while the province said it still supports expanding the airport and believes it could bring major economic benefits.
