Ford softens tone as U.S. trade talks approach
Ontario trade talks: Ford softens tone as Canada-U.S. negotiations heat up Protect Ontario's auto sector and see why diplomacy may shape the next deal
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is taking a less confrontational tone toward the United States as important trade talks near, including upcoming discussions on the CanadaU.S.Mexico Agreement.
Ford recently completed the first of three planned June trips to the U.S., where he has been promoting Ontario’s “Fortress North America” strategy to policymakers and industry groups. He has also signaled a more cooperative message, saying he “loves the American people” and values the reception he receives in the U.S.
The shift comes after months of sharp criticism of President Donald Trump and his tariff policies. Ford previously threatened countermeasures on hydro exports and backed Ontario’s antitariff advertising campaign, both of which drew anger from the Trump administration. Political observers say the change in tone may reflect the need for a more diplomatic approach as negotiations intensify and Ontario seeks to protect its tradedependent economy, especially the auto sector.
