Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has ordered a temporary statewide restriction on fireworks for the July Fourth holiday because of severe wildfire conditions and ongoing drought.
The executive order takes effect July 2 and allows the state forester to limit fireworks within municipal boundaries through July 5. Local officials can still set aside designated safe areas for displays if they work with fire chiefs.
State officials said much of Utah is experiencing extreme drought and that recent wildfires have already burned large areas this season. Cox said the aim is to reduce preventable fires and protect neighborhoods, homes, and firefighters during a period of elevated risk.
