Ontario shed 16,700 jobs in June, according to new Statistics Canada data, after stronger gains in April and May had helped offset earlier weakness.
The province’s unemployment rate remained at 7 per cent, still above the national average of 6.5 per cent. The report follows a warning from Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office earlier in the month that the province’s workforce had fallen at its fastest pace since 1976, excluding the pandemic period.
Provincial and opposition politicians pointed to different causes for the decline. The Ontario government cited uncertainty linked to U.S. tariffs and trade disruption, while opposition leaders argued the province should focus on policies and investments that support job creation and affordability.
