Two-year-old seriously injured in coyote attack at Whitby playground

A twoyearold boy was seriously injured after a coyote attacked him at a playground in Whitby, Ont., on Sunday evening, Durham police said. The child was taken to hospital with injuries that were serious but not lifethreatening. Police said the attack happened at Vanier Park, where the coyote bit the boy in the face before his guardian and bystanders drove it away. About an hour later, officers responded to another coyote report in the area and removed the animal from a separate location. Durham police are working with Whitby officials, animal services and the local health department to review the incidents and monitor coyote activity. They said there had been multiple recent sightings in the community, including 96 reports in Whitby over the past 30 days, and reminded residents to stay alert near parks, trails and other green spaces.
